The Fairytale Hairdresser is making a splash in this super sixth story. In an aquatic adventure she saves her friend the little mermaid from a terrible tangle.
The Little Mermaid is all in a lather – the Sea Witch has stolen her beautiful singing voice! Kittie, Lacey, The Fairytale Hairdresser, will need all her hairdressing (and matchmaking) skills to tackle this terrible tangle and guarantee a happy ever after.
This magical, fairytale adventure is awash with funny fairytale references to spot and favourite friends to find, with a sprinkling of glitz and glamour. Fairytales and folk tales are a key part of the national curriculum and The Fairytale Hairdresser and the Little Mermaid is a fun, fresh look at a classic fairytale that every child has heard.
The funky, stylish illustrations by Lauren Beard are packed with witty fairytale details to spot, read after read with the stories taking place in a modern re-interpretation of Fairyland with a diverse set of characters and lots of in-jokes.
The Fairytale Hairdresser is a fantastic business woman and role model, showing that fashion and fun can be combined with courage, quick thinking and self-determination, written by Abie Longstaff a trained human rights barrister
About the author:
Abie Longstaff is the eldest of six children and grew up in Australia, Hong Kong and France. She knows all about squabbling, chaos and bossing younger sisters around. So she logically began her career as a barrister. She started writing when her children were born. Her favourite childhood books were Hating Alison Ashley, A Little Princess, Maura’s Angel and The Black Stallion and she sneakily reads them again sometimes. Abie lives in North London with her family and a very pesky cocker spaniel who chews the post.
About the illustrator:
Lauren Beard graduated from Loughborough University with a degree in illustration in 2006. The same year she was highly commended in the Macmillan book prize and has worked as a freelance illustrator ever since. Lauren lives in Manchester with her cat, Sushi.
Me and my little girl, Caitlin, 5, really loved this book. It’s a different take on Disney’s Little Mermaid, but follows Kittie Lacey the best hairdresser in the land. Really liked how Abie updated an old classic. My favourite thing about the book is the installations, they are just brilliant. There are lot’s of fun thing to spot in each picture including lot’s of other fairy tale characters.
We give this book 5/5 stars.
