How you were born book review

How you were born by Monica Calaf and Illustrated by Mikel Fuentes is not your normal kind of birth story for kids.

This one tells the truth but in a very gently way that kids will still understand.

The pictures are amazing, really bright and colourful.

And they are also very different and ones I wouldn’t expect in a book aimed at young children. Like the picture below, it show the mothers nipples as black circles. And in one illustration it show the baby being born. Some people may not like to show their young children this, but I thought it was fantastic and just the kind of book children need to read. A true to life birth story. No pics of mum going into hospital and then laying on a bed in a full length nightie. This book helps children understand how babies are really born.

I read this to all three of my kids aged 9, 4 and 3. They really liked it, my eldest Ryan was the first to notices the women’s boobies and thought it was hilarious, giggling all the way through the story. But Caitlin who is 4 was fascinated with this book and kept asking me loads of questions about her birth. Was I naked? did I have to take my knickers off? Did it really hurt? Did you love me straight away?

I would recommend this book to any parent with young kids.
